How It’s Made: The Duramax Diesel Engine


Duramax Diesel Engines are made in Moraine, Ohio. They are manufactured by DMAX Ltd. which is a combined venture between General Motors and Isuzu. It can build 200,000 engines in a year and has built a total of more than 1.3 million Duramax Diesel Engines.

The Facilities

The facility in which the Duramax Diesel Engines are made is very well lit, safety oriented, and all its employees working there are concerned about the production and take responsibility for what they are building. At the production site, the raw materials enter from the west end of the building and then they progress towards the east end of the building as that’s where the blocks, rods, heads and cranks are processed by the machines. Then the machines are used to adjust each engine’s valvetrain, as well as the dyno cells.

The Duramax valve lash is assembled by the system when every engine’s rotating assembly is spun individually for several times, and a sequence of what looks like a laser-range detector and electronically driven socket regulate the controller stroke.

On the other hand, the dyno cells are made as every individual engine is placed on a stand which slides into its own dyno room. The engines then bring them up to the operating temperature as they have preheated oil and coolant within the engines. To start the engine, the dyno spins it over repeatedly. Every engine runs on diesel which is to guarantee that full output is achieved.

The Newer Engine

The new Duramax Diesel Engine has a stronger cylinder block and cylinder heads, new and stronger rotating and reciprocating assembly, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system, increased oil- and coolant-flow capacity, electronically controlled turbocharging system plus new solenoid fuel system and electronic controls as well as new full-length damped steel oil pan that ensures the quietness of the Duramax diesel engine.

General Motors- whose profile is the most expanded one amongst the industry and its competitors of passenger cars, crossovers, pickups and vans that solely run on diesel- has confirmed that there will be Chevy Duramax transmission as Chevrolet’s highly-anticipated, all-new Class 4/5 commercial trucks will be powered by Duramax diesel engine and Allison transmission– a fabulous combination that has powered almost more than two million trucks. The Duramax diesel engine and Allison transmission are planned to power Chevrolet’s all-new medium-duty commercial trucks in the future.

This announcement was made by Chevrolet at The Work Truck Show in 2017 and confirmed that the Chevy Duramax Allison transmission available for sale is a work in progress and will be launched in 2018. It is being jointly developed by the companies Chevrolet and Navistar.

The Chevy Duramax Allison transmission available for sale will be manufactured to have enhanced performance, increased operational flexibility, and greater control and comfort for the driver. It is designed to ensure that it has better performance but requires relatively a low maintenance cost. The Chevy Duramax Allison transmission coupled with the Chevrolet’s Duramax diesel engines provide the superior power delivery and higher productivity to satisfy customers demand.
